Community Tree Planting in Congleton Town Wood

Almost 100 trees were planted in the Town Wood in Congleton Park last weekend (Sunday 6 March) thanks to some enthusiastic volunteers.

In January 2011, Congleton Town Council applied for and received a free Community tree pack of 420 trees (hawthorn, oak, rowan and birch) as part of the RHS Britain In Bloom scheme. The sapling trees were supplied by the Woodland Trust.

Patti Pinto of eco learning took the majority of trees and visited school children at The Quinta and St Mary’s to plant some hedgerows with the eco warriors to improve their biodiversity. Later in March more trees will be distributed and planted at Congleton High and Astbury Primary.

Tree planting is a major theme in this year’s RHS In Bloom competitions and the team hope that this additional planting, along with the fruit tree planting in schools as part of the Congleton Sustainability group’s Apple Juice campaign will strengthen Congleton’s entry.

Margaret Williamson said: “It was a fantastic boost to receive 420 free trees and they have been carefully planted to help benefit wildlife, and increase the biodiversity in the Town Wood. Everyone is grateful to the Woodland Trust for supplying the trees and equipment. Thanks are due to the volunteers who turned up on a beautiful afternoon to help and this community participation will strengthen the In Bloom entry!”

The next steps for Congleton’s In Bloom campaign is a mass Town Tidy up on Saturday 9th April from 10am – 12 noon where local people and groups are encouraged to come along and join in a Spring Clean and the Children’s Plant up morning on Saturday 12 May.

If you think you can help with Congleton’s In Bloom entry please contact the Town Council on 01260 270350.
