Commemorative tree plantingThe Jubilee Year of celebrations for Congleton began on Friday February 10th when the Lord - Lieutenant of Cheshire, David Briggs MBE KSt J, the Queen’s representative in the county, visited Daven Primary School to celebrate the sixty years of her Majesty’s reign by planting a commemorative tree with the pupils. All sixteen eco schools in Congleton and District are busy this month planting a Lord Darby species of apple tree in their grounds to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee which will extend the mini orchards they are all developing. ‘ I am very pleased to have been invited by the children to give support to this special way of commemorating the Jubilee which is so appropriate for an eco school. I hope I will be invited along again in a few years to sample one of its apples’ said the Lord Lieutenant. The eco council had made a special thank you card for David Briggs showing him planting the tree with them. The Jubilee Apple Project has been sponsored by both the Congleton Inclosure trust and the William Dean Trust and their representatives, Ken Wainwright, Peter Boon and David Daniel were delighted, to be in attendance at the ceremony. Margaret Williamson MBE DL and Denis Murphy, a governor at the school and Paul Tolley, the headmaster were on hand to welcome their distinguished guest. Also there in support were representatives from Mossley and Astbury primary schools who will be planting their Jubilee tree this month. ‘I should like to congratulate and thank Mrs Patti Pinto, the co-ordinator of the Congleton and District eco school network ,who has worked so hard and enthusiastically to organise the Jubilee Apple Tree Project in the town and area.’ commented Margaret Williamson, a trustee of the William Dean Trust, ‘The weather is not the best at the moment to carry out the planting but she is doing a superb job’.
